How to treat your melasma and keep it at bay

The most effective approach is one that combines in-office treatments, products(s), and oral supplement(s).

  1. Get a professional evaluation. The best thing you can do to maximize your outcome is to get professional advice. A treatment plan should be customized to your lifestyle, goals, skin type, treatment history, and budget. This kind of customized, combination approach has the best chance of improving the appearance of melasma and reducing the chance of reoccurrence. 

  2. If you’ve already been prescribed or recommended topical products to treat or maintain your melasma, make sure to keep in regular (once per month) contact with a medical skincare professional. Some topical ingredients should not be used long-term, during certain times of the year, or in combination with certain lifestyle activities. Unfortunately this isn’t always clearly communicated. Topical products can be incredibly effective but using them incorrectly can (at best) hinder your outcome and (at worst) lead to adverse side-effects. 

  3. Wear broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen every day, rain or shine. Put twice as much on as you think you should, and no, your makeup doesn’t count.
